We recently caught up with our very own Bob Gralley ’49 and had the chance to ask him about his Sigma Chi experience, and where life since Maryland has taken him. Here’s what he had to say:
Where has life taken you since you graduated? Give us a brief recap up to this point including career and family highlights.
Upon graduating I started working in administration at Mutual Of New York, at the time the largest mutual life insurance company in the country. I worked my way up and after 40 years retired as Vice President and Assistant to the President. Having met my wife at Maryland, we have a wonderful family with three children. Appreciating that I am now much older, looking back life at the University is one of the highlights of my days.
What are the most important lessons you learned because of Sigma Chi?
Becoming a Sigma Chi I learned the importance and enjoyment of meeting and getting along with others. Everyone is different and has different interests, but doing favors for others and having them do favors for you makes life much more enjoyable. Sigma Chi represented that because of the closeness we had for each other. It is a lesson learned that assisted throughout life.
When you look back on your time in Sigma Chi, what moments do you tend to remember most?
After graduating at Maryland I still kept in touch with a number of brothers, which made life enjoyable. The values that Sigma Chi stood for, stays with you throughout life no matter how long you live. I must admit that at my tender age of 95 life is quite a bit different than when much younger, but memories of the good times I had as a Sig at Maryland will always be with me.
